Position Background & Responsibilities

The Skype Consumer Group is delivering solutions that shape the experiences of millions of people who interact using Skype every day to message, call and interact with their friends, families and loved ones. The Skype Consumer Group is the engineering, operations and business group comprised of the Skype Consumer clients across many operating systems and devices and the cloud based backend services that power those clients. This group serves consumers and business customers globally.

This senior program manager role will own the strategy and execution for Skype.com, one of the most visited websites in the world. We are expanding Skype beyond the way users traditionally think of Skype with a completely redesigned Skype client and features such as highlights. Skype.com is the way customers learn about Skype and get links to download the Skype client. Skype.com needs to help our customers learn about the new capabilities of Skype by providing an immersive experience. Skype.com also points customers to the broader Microsoft products and offerings such as Office 365, Outlook.com, OneDrive and others. To this end, we are looking for a passionate and product centric program manager who can help us shape the strategy of where we should take Skype.com. This person will also help us engage with customers to understand what their requirements are and what are the leading edge design and web technologies we should adopt. In addition, this person will work with the broader Microsoft web community to understand how Skype.com fits in with the other large web properties Microsoft owns – Microsoft.com, Linkedin.com, MSN.com, etc.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Drive our strategy for Skype.com including roadmap and key metrics

  • Own the execution of our product strategy including directing the development of products, features and experiences for our customers in partnership with our development engineers

  • Plan and facilitate deep conversations with our customers to understand their requirements, pain points and ways to address these

  • Serve as the Skype representative with key partner teams within Microsoft who focus on consumer technologies and solutions as well as web platforms

Qualifications and skills

  • Seasoned engineering professional with multi-disciplinary experience

  • Deep understanding and passion for consumer centric products and experiences

  • Good design sense and the ability to weave customer experiences on the web

  • Ability to dive deep especially in developer, platform and web technologies and solutions

  • Understanding of both client technologies and the cloud

  • Demonstrated track record of exceeding established goals on a consistent basis

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and navigate through uncertain situations to drive for clarity

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills required

  • Must think strategically about product and business issues

  • Creative thinker who can see ‘the big picture’ and unite new and disparate ideas with practical plans, working comfortably in the face of ambiguity while driving persistently towards success

  • Skilled in translating ideas into clear communication

  • Balance of technical and business acumen, capability to ramp up quickly on the business

  • High personal accountability for self and others

Education and Experience:

  • A university/college degree

  • 10+ years relevant experience in technology

  • Strong product and audience skills to help drive product decisions based on customer needs

  • Proven experience successfully operating in a global, highly matrixed environment required

  • High degree of executive maturity required with strong collaboration skills.
